Webinar: McIntyre Powder, Mining Exposures and Health

The Occupational Health Clinics for Ontario Workers (OHCOW) is presenting a FREE Webinar on McIntyre Powder, Mining Exposures and Health on Thursday December 12th, 2019 from 12pm to 1pm.

McIntyre Powder (aluminum dust inhalation “treatment”) was used in dozens of mines throughout northern Ontario. OHCOW is investigating possible health effects linked to McIntyre Powder and other mining exposures. OHCOW is completing scientific literature review reports on various health issues affecting miners (COPD, lung cancer, sarcoidosis, bladder cancer, pancreatic cancer, kidney cancer, and cardiovascular disease). This webinar will include presentations by OHCOW staff and Dr. Christine Oliver (Occupational and Environmental Medicine Specialist).

About the speakers: 

Christine Oliver, MD, MPH, MS

Christine Oliver is President of Occupational Health Initiatives, Inc. She is an adjunct professor in the Occupational and Environmental Health Division of the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto. Dr. Oliver is a member of the Ontario Task Force on Environmental Health and a consultant to the Occupational Health Clinics for Ontario Workers (OHCOW).  She was formerly an associate clinical professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and a member of the Department of Medicine (Pulmonary and Critical Care Division) at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.  Dr. Oliver’s primary specialty is occupational and environmental medicine, with an emphasis on occupational lung disease.  Dr. Oliver is a Fellow of the Collegium Ramazzini and has done research in the area of occupational lung disease, with a focus on asbestos-related disease.  She has lectured frequently on this topic, including more recently the determination of risk for asbestos-related lung cancer. Dr. Oliver has testified before Congress and OSHA on issues related to asbestos and other workplace exposures. 


Andrew Zarnke

Andrew Zarnke is an Occupational Health Coordinator at OHCOW. He is also a Ph.D candidate in the Biomolecular Sciences program at Laurentian University. Andrew is doing ongoing research involving McIntyre Powder, including a paper recently published in the Journal of Occupational & Environmental Hygiene.
