Working conditions were severe and it was quite common to work 10 to 16 hour days in unsafe conditions. Death and injury were commonplace at many work places and inspired such books as Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle and Jack London’s The Iron Heel. As early as the 1860’s\, working people agitated to shorten the workday without a cut in pay\, but it wasn’t until the late 1880’s that organized labor was able to garner enough strength to declare the 8-hour workday. This proclamation was without consent of employers\, yet demanded by many of the working class. \nAt its national convention in Chicago\, held in 1884\, the Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions (which later became the American Federation of Labor)\, proclaimed that “eight hours shall constitute a legal day’s labor from and after May 1\, 1886.” The following year\, the FOTLU\, backed by many Knights of Labor locals\, reiterated their proclamation stating that it would be supported by strikes and demonstrations. On May 1\, 1886\, more than 300\,000 workers in 13\,000 businesses across the United States walked off their jobs in the first May Day celebration in history. \nThe sacrifices of so many people can not be forgotten or we’ll end up fighting for those same gains all over again. This is why we celebrate May Day. \nFrom: https://archive.iww.org/history/library/misc/origins_of_mayday/[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/6″][vc_single_image image=”55755″ img_size=”medium” alignment=”right” css=””][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text] \nCanadian Unions: CUPE\nInternational Workers’ Day is an opportunity to celebrate the union movement’s victories and recognize the importance of continuing our global fight for labour rights\, equity and economic justice. \nFor more than a century International Workers’ Day has acknowledged and celebrated the achievements of the trade union movement. The list is long and includes the establishment of employment standards\, occupational health and safety legislation\, and old age security. \nCUPE’s page for IWD[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row top_padding=”20″][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text] \nMay Day: Celebrating the Trade Union Movement\nEach year\,  workers across the globe celebrate May 1st\, International Workers’ Day (May Day) as their Labour Day. \nFor more than a century International Workers’ Day has acknowledged and celebrated the achievements of the trade union movement. The list is long and includes the establishment of employment standards\, occupational health and safety legislation\, and old age security. \nCommemorating the achievements of working people is important\, but International Workers’ Day is also a reminder to continue the effort —  and even more so\, as factors such as globalization can only be countered by stronger solidarity. \nSo on May 1\, International Workers’ Day we were reminded – as 21st century workers – to stand with each other around the globe in common purpose and solidarity\, with people of different backgrounds and nationalities who share the same wish for workers’ empowerment. \nUFCW page for IWD[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

The construction industry represents one of the largest employment sectors in the world—and with that scale comes immense responsibility\, and opportunity.\nOver the last decade\, we’ve made meaningful strides: advancing best practices\, transitioning from hard hats to helmets\, shedding light on vital issues that affect health and safety\, like mental health\, fostering a culture of care and accountability\, and creating partnerships and initiatives for improving jobsite safety.[/vc_column_text]See Website[/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row top_padding=”10″][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text] \n\nFROM OHCOW\nThe Silica Control Tool\nSave Lives and Preserve the Health of Workers\nConstruction Workers are at high risk of illness as well as injury. Research has proven the harmful and sometimes fatal effects of crystalline silica\, a very fine dust that can cause respiratory illness and cancer when inhaled. This dust is present when construction materials such as glass\, concrete\, asphalt\, and other substances are grinded\, sawed or crushed. \nIf there is even a chance that workers are being exposed to silica dust the FREE Silica Control Tool should be in use. For more information on who is at risk\, and links to free registration for the Tool\, check out our web page. The tool is available in French and there is a version created especially for surface mining.[/vc_column_text]Go to SCT Page[/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row top_padding=”15″][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text] \nHand Arm Vibration (HAVS)\nHand-arm vibration is the transfer of vibration from a tool or workplace to a worker’s hands or arms. It is common for construction workers who handle drills and other heavy hand-held equipment.\nThe level of hand-arm vibration is determined by measuring the acceleration of the tool or object grasped by the worker. It effects the the circulatory\, nervous and musculoskeletal systems of the worker and can lead to serious injury. \nOHCOW resources included a web page with links to video resources\, an info sheet with access to a pdf download to print out or send\, and a new three-part informative video. Historically\, the extent to which these measures have been validated\, feasibly deployed\, and linked to the demands of work remains has been unclear. Additionally\, recent technological advancements may aid in the practical implementation of such tools in real-world occupational settings. This presentation describes psychophysiological measurement tools and methods suitable for use in occupational settings and their applicability for assessing cognitive and mental demands of work. Findings will inform the development of more standardized methodologies and support best practices for reliable objective psychophysiological assessment in occupational research and practice. \nWorkplace Harassment and its Effects on Healthcare Workers’ Mental Health\nSPEAKER: Vicki Kristman\, PhD\, Director & Scientist EPID@Work \nMental Health and Substance Use in Construction Workers\nSPEAKER: Nancy Carnide\, PhD\, Associate Scientist\, IWH[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner]Register on Eventbrite[/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row]
