SUMMARY:National Nursing Week
DESCRIPTION:Ontario Nurses Association Website \nDuring Nursing Week\, we celebrate the dedication\, expertise\, and achievements of registered nurses (RNs)\, registered practical nurses (RPNs) and nurse practitioners (NPs.) This year\, for ONA nurses\, Nursing Week is being held May 12-18. \nOur 2025 Nursing Week theme is:\nRaising our voices. Speaking the truth.\nFaire entendre nos voix. Dire la vérité. \nThis theme captures our growing momentum in telling Ontarians the brutal truth. We find ourselves at a crossroads. Never before has it been so important to speak out and speak the truth about what is going on in our health-care system. \nNursing Week offers a great opportunity to do more than celebrate. We can also amplify our concerns and our bold ideas for solutions. We know the value of the experienced and highly skilled nurses in our health-care system\, and how it is endangered if we don’t address recruitment and retention of the nursing workforce.

SUMMARY:AccessAbility Week
DESCRIPTION:The AODA page for Accessibilty Week \nDuring National AccessAbility Week\, we recognize the ways people with disabilities take part in their communities.\nCitizens with disabilities are sometimes prevented from full involvement in their communities because they encounter accessibility barriers. Barriers limit the things people with disabilities can do\, the places they can go\, or the ways other community members interact with them.\nNational AccessAbility Week gives us the chance to honour people committed to removing these barriers. Some of these activists have disabilities\, while others are non-disabled allies who understand what their fellow community members are capable of. When we break down barriers\, we make sure that people with disabilities have the same opportunities as their fellow community members.

SUMMARY:Injured Workers Day
DESCRIPTION:Every year on June 1st\, Ontarians pay respect to the hundreds of workers who have died or become injured while working on their job sites. The Ontario Injured Workers Day is an opportunity to recognize the individuals who have suffered injuries and fatalities as a result of their workplace conditions. \nIn Ontario\, we owe a debt to Sudbury MPP and NDP Labour critic Jamie West\, who pushed to have June 1 officially recognized as Ontario’s Injured Workers Day. Last year he introduced his Private Member’s Bill\, Bill 118\, the Injured Workers Day Act\,  in the Ontario legislature.  Because of this Act\, June 1 of every year will be formally recognized as Injured Workers Day. See OHCOW page about this achievement. \nRead Bill 118\, Injured Workers Day Act\, 2024\, S.O. 2024 here. \nSee the Ontario Federation of Labour Page here. \nSee the UFCW Injured Workers page here. \nEVENTS: \nJune 1st is (officially) Injured Workers Day. On June 1st 1983\, more than 3000 injured & ill workers and allies crowded the lawn at Queen’s Park demanding dignity and respect in the face of corporatization and cuts. This June 1 at 11am is another gathering on that same spot. \nOver 40 years later\, injured & ill workers will again gather Sunday June 1st to celebrate our strength and continue to fight for law and policy reform. Thanks to Bill 118 The Injured Workers’ Day Act\, June 1st this year (and every year going forward)\, will be officially proclaimed Injured Workers’ Day by the Legislature of Ontario.

SUMMARY:Men's Health Month: Never Alone
DESCRIPTION:The Canadian Men’s Health Foundation is marking June 2025\, Men’s Health Month\, with a campaign entitled\, Never Alone. This June\, join guys across Canada talking about the tough stuff and getting tools to build better mental health. The 2025 Men’s Health Report contains concerning reports of the health of Canadian men\, physically and mentally. \nSee the webpage here\, that has links to a June 12 workshop for men and other resources. \nEach year\, the week leading up to and including Father’s Day is Men’s Health Week — an excellent opportunity to reflect on and raise awareness about the importance of the health and well-being of Canadian men. Some organizations such as The Canadian Men’s Health Foundation designates the entire month of June as Men’s Health Month. In 2017\, The provincial government started a partnership with the Canadian Men’s Health Foundation to promote healthier lifestyles for men. In 2021\, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research published information about the health of boys and men in Canada\, looking at mental health and wellness\, violence\, disease\, accident rate\, and physical activity. \nAccording to Public Health Canada\, many Canadian men are not achieving their optimal health. In fact\, on average\, they live four fewer years than Canadian women\, for a number of occupational and non-occupational reasons. \nIn the workplace\, it is known that men are less likely to seek support for mental health\, depression and emotional distress. In 2023\, research was done specifically on the mental health of workers in the skilled trades\, and found a connection between physical safety on the job and mental health. \nThe website Mentell Health is a resource for men to connect\, learn and discuss issues around mental health and emotional well being. They also have a page dedicated to Men’s Health Month. \nSee also Men’s Health Week. \n  \nWorkplace Mental Health Webinar Series\n \nOHCOW’s Mayday\, Mayday Webinar series has featured sessions on mental health in male-dominated trades\, such as the 2023 webinar\, Crisis Planning for Worker & Responder Mental Health. \nSee the playlist for the 2025 Mayday\, Mayday here. \nAdditional resources:\nGovernment of Canada \nCanadian Mental Health Association

SUMMARY:Webinar: Work and Health in Primary Care in Ontario
DESCRIPTION:Work and health in Primary Care in Ontario: Improving the recognition and recording of work relatedness \nIn partnership with  Dalhousie University and Praxus Health \nRegister \nThis pilot study aims to address gaps in work and health by integrating occupational data collection into primary care through an online questionnaire. This system will simplify the capture and coding of patient occupation\, allowing primary care providers (PCPs) to offer more informed advice on occupational health and wellbeing. \nThe study’s outcomes will include the creation of a large occupational health database and the provision of real-time aggregated occupational information to key stakeholders. If successful\, this system could be widely implemented in primary care clinics across the province\, enhancing the understanding of occupational health risks\, improving patient care\, and informing evidence-based employee health policies. \nDr. Anil Adisesh (Dalhousie University): Dr Anil Adisesh is an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine at Dalhousie University. He is the lead investigator for the study\, Work and Health in Primary Care in Ontario: Improving the recognition and recording of work relatedness. Together with Dr Andrea Furlan he is the co-lead of the ECHO OEM telementoring program for primary health-care providers in Ontario\, both projects are funded by WSIB Ontario. \nPraxus Health Bio: Praxus Health is a Canadian not-for-profit that collaborates with a diverse range of partners to drive meaningful change and improve the health of communities. By connecting diverse sectors\, from public to private\, Praxus Health strives to solve complex health problems and empower communities to take control of their health. The organization’s work spans multiple health topics including occupational health\, primary care innovation\, immunization\, cancer screening and more! \n

SUMMARY:Uterine Fibroid Awareness Day
DESCRIPTION:The Canadian organization\, the Vivre 100 fibromes association\, seeks to improve available information\, structures and platforms dedicated to uterine fibroids in Quebec and in Canada\, and  to improve the medical\, social and psychological conditions of those with uterine fibroids. The main objective is to provide better access to information. \nvivre100fibromes website \nThe Workplace and Reproductive Health\nThe Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) has a web page on reproductive health. Reproductive hazards are factors that cause conditions to the reproductive organs and can interfere with a person’s ability to procreate. \n In most cases\, fibroids are extremely small and barely noticeable. The condition should be monitored as they can expand in size over time and in some cases lead to infertility\, chronic pain\, and cancer. \nReproductive health issues are usually not work related. However\, exposure to metals\, solvents\, pesticides\, radiation\, viruses\, and extreme stress are all factors that can effect reproductive health. \nIf you think workplace conditions may have caused your fibroids or other reproductive health issues\, contact us.
