The Occupational Health Clinics for Ontario Workers (OHCOW) are dedicated to the identification and prevention of work-related illnesses and injuries. The first OHCOW Clinic opened in Hamilton in 1989. There are now six Clinics in Ontario funded by the Ministry of Labour (MOL). Each Clinic has an Executive Director and is staffed by a dedicated team of occupational specialists.
In 1974, uranium miners in Elliot Lake became alarmed about the high incidence of lung cancer and silicosis among the workers. They went on strike over health and safety conditions. The outcome was that the government appointed a Royal Commission to investigate health and safety in mines. Chaired by Dr. James Ham, this Commission made recommendations that had a significant effect on the content of the Occupational Health and Safety Act passed in Ontario in 1978.
Given the significant contribution northern workers made to protect workers and improve the health and safety conditions in their workplace, it was only fitting that funding was provided to establish an OHCOW clinic in Northern Ontario.
The Sudbury OHCOW Clinic was officially launched in March of 1992. Until 2010, the Sudbury Clinic provided service to all of Northern Ontario. It now provides service to north-eastern Ontario. Major communities include: Barry?s Bay, Bracebridge, Cardiff, Chalk River, Deep River, Elliot Lake, Gravenhurst, Haliburton, Hearst, Huntsville, Kapuskasing, Killaloe, Madawaska, Manitoulin Island, North Bay, Parry Sound, Petawawa, Sault Ste. Marie, Sudbury, Timmins, and Wawa.
The principal industries of our catchment area are mining, forestry, and hydroelectricity. We partner with workers, employers, unions, and advocates. We provide the expertise to assist in the identification and elimination of occupational injuries and illnesses in the workplaces of our catchment area.
